Prayer Wednesday

Why does the wicked man revile God?
Why does he say to himself,
“He won’t call me to account”?
But you, O God, do see trouble and grief;
You consider it and take it in hand.
The victim commits him(her)self to you;
You are the helper of the fatherless.
Break the arm of the wicked and evil man;
Call him to account for his wickedness
That would not be found out.

Psalm 10 is a full-out “God get the bad guys!” prayer. The world is not right, people are taken advantage of, and people act selfishly. Some get away with crimes and injustice that leave the powerless even more destitute.

“You consider it and take it in hand.”

I love that phrase! You know when you find something on the beach—a rock or shell or something that glitters—and you place it in the palm of your hand to take a look at it? You turn it over and over, looking at it from various angles, and decide whether you’ll toss it back in the sea or put it in your pocket as a precious new treasure.

God takes the trouble and grief of our lives and places them in his hand. In fact, Isaiah 49 tells us, “See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands.” We’re there for good. He’s not tossing us back or even putting us in his pocket. We’re carved in his palms. He never forgets us. This is all the more powerful and true since the crucifixion when Jesus’ hands were pierced by the nails that hung him on the cross. He kept those scars.

You are not forgotten! Never.

Our Lord has you in his eyes continuously and, as you pray, in his ears too.

Praying with you this day.

Andrew

James 5:13-20 - A life of faith is a life of prayer. It’s also a life lived with others. When we follow Jesus, we belong to Him and to one another as brothers and sisters. As a family, we care for one another in weakness, confess our sins to each other, and gently confront one another.
