Generous: Living Open-Handed | The Grip of Greed

Jesus tells us to watch out for all kinds of greed. The challenge is, greed is sneaky—it hides in our hearts. So Jesus tells a story illustrating three attitudes towards money that are symptoms of greed: I deserve it. It’s all for me. I’m better off with more.

Questions:

  1. In what ways do you notice the culture around you feeding discontentment and greed in you?
  2. If you were to measure your level of contentment on a scale of 1 to 10—where 1 is feeling the anxiety of greed and a desire for more, and 10 is feeling satisfied with what you have—where would you plot yourself right now?
  3. Which of the three symptoms of greed (I deserve it; it’s all for me; I’m better off with more) is the most persistent in your life?
  4. What do you think it looks like to be “rich toward God”?
  5. How is Jesus inviting you to push back against greed in your life this week? Is there a specific practice—gratitude, sharing, simplifying—that you will try?

Bonus: Did you have a chance to practice last week’s challenge to give away some money to bless someone? If you’re willing, share about that experience.
