The Life Of Jesus

John’s biography of Jesus slows as he chronicles the week leading up to Jesus’ death. Jesus has a long, careful conversation with the disciples, and today, we listen to the beginning of that conversation. He begins with a strong command: “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” He then reinforces it with three unshakable assurances: He is going ahead of them, He has cleared the way to the Father, and He will send supernatural power so they can continue His work.

Questions

John 14:1-14

  1. Recall the last time your ‘heart was troubled’. Do you remember God sustaining you through that experience, or, if you're honest, do you feel He failed you? Unpack that together.
  2. What confidence do you have in Jesus’ promise to “go and prepare a place for you”?
  3. Give an example of how Jesus has been (a) the Way (b) the Truth and (c) the Life, in your own journey.
  4. How do you experience Jesus’ promise: “They will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things…”? How do you process or explain any gap that may exist between that promise and your life?
  5. Offer three practical steps for the next time you face troubles, based on Jesus’ assurance: “Don’t let your hearts be troubled… trust in me.”

Psalm 129 is a bit of a nasty Psalm! The writer has been oppressed and doesn’t hold back in expressing what that feels like. You might think being a believer means your troubles disappear, but that has never been the case. The good news is that God is neither blind nor indifferent to our struggles.
