The Life Of Jesus

Jesus’ friend John was very careful to record the things that Jesus said about Himself. As an observant Jew, John knew that there is only one God. From time to time, God sent prophets, ordained priests, and crowned kings so that the people of God had someone to lead them to Him. Everyone knew that these leaders only ever pointed to God; they never claimed any status beyond being messengers. But when Jesus came, He was different. He claimed to be “the Light of the World,” “the Truth that sets you free,” and “the Resurrection and the Life”—all of them ridiculous claims for anyone but God to make. That was exactly His point.

  2. The Jewish leaders had waited for hundreds of years for the Messiah to show up. Why were they so angry with Jesus?
  3. What was Jesus claiming when he said “Before Abraham was, I am”? Do you have trouble understanding Jesus to be the God of the Old Testament? How do you make sense of that?
  4. Do you feel that God has ever let you down? If so, what expectation did you have that God didn’t live up to? In what way(s) has your faith had to adjust to who Jesus really is?
  5. They tried to stone him (for blasphemy) but Jesus escaped, only to lay his life down for their sin a short time later. What difference does it make in your life that Jesus chose to die in your place?
