Prayer Wednesday

You love evil rather than good,
Falsehood rather than speaking the truth.
You love every harmful word,
you deceitful tongue!

Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin:
He will snatch you up and pluck you from your tent;
He will uproot you from the land of the living.

Doeg the Edomite was a bad dude. He was an informant to King Saul. (Think Prince John from Robin Hood!) Doeg was like the Sheriff of Nottingham. He ratted out David and killed the entire town of Nob, slaughtering its 85 priests and all of its men and women and children and infants and even livestock. All that bloodshed because one priest gave David a sword and some bread. (I Samuel 21-22 tells the story).

You can see why David was heated.

And so we begin Lent together in prayer! We begin with the awkwardness of David’s rage in prayer.

It’s perfect actually. This is a reminder of what the world would look like without Jesus: the wicked destroying the righteous and the righteous firing curses and judgment right back.

This day and during this season of Lent let’s stay (or get) emotionally aware. Let’s acknowledge what lurks inside us, the good and the bad. And let’s together lay these pieces out before our Lord Jesus in prayer. There’s no sense in praying if you’re not going to be honest. Jesus will help you sort through the strong emotions, but you have to bring them into the light.

Praying with you for the Doegs of this world. They are (as are we) best placed in the hands of Jesus.

Andrew
