Where's The Hope? | Settled and Secure

Last week, Paul went into great detail about Jesus, how sovereign and supreme he is and all that he did in pursuit of us. This week, we, Christians, enter the story. Paul only uses 2 words to describe our side of the story: alienated and reconciled. Again, Jesus did all the heavy lifting on the reconciliation side! And that, Paul explains, is the Good News, the Gospel.

Colossians 1:21-23

Questions:

  1. Tell the story of being far away from where you were supposed to be (lost!). How did that story play out?
  2. What does it look like when humans are alienated from God? Do you resonate with the language of ‘enemies in your minds’ or ‘evil behaviour’? Explain.
  3. Why does it matter that Jesus used his body to reconcile us? Why did he have to die?
  4. How should a Christian respond when they don’t feel ‘without blemish’ or ‘free from accusation’?
  5. Tell the story of a time you experienced reconciliation. What was needed? How did people respond?

Colossians 2:13-19 - Humans have a problem that we can’t save ourselves from—not through secular programs or religious systems. The good news of Jesus is that on the cross, Jesus dealt with it all. In him we are alive, forgiven, and free!

Colossians 2:1-7-The way forward for the first Christians wasn't always easy. False teachers brought confusion and deception, prompting Paul to point believers back to the truth. Just as the best way to spot a counterfeit is to know the genuine article, the best way to recognize false teaching is to know Jesus.

Colossians 1:24-29-Suffering is one of life's hardest realities. We might expect that following Jesus would mean less pain, but Jesus himself suffered and made it clear that his followers would too. The good news is that our suffering is never lost on God and is never in vain.
